Much Drinking in the Marsh

Much Drinking in the Marsh: a History of the Pubs and Breweries of Romney Marsh

In this country, there are two institutions which have been fundamental to the development of communities and which are complementary: the church and the pub.  There has been plenty written – rightly – of the magnificence of Romney Marsh’s churches, but less on its pubs.

Down the years, the Marsh has been served by some wonderful pubs. Some of these have inevitably and unfortunately gone to the wall, although there are many fine examples still to be found. This book explores the history of the area’s hostelries and breweries and seeks to address some of this imbalance. Within it you will find dark deeds, ghosts, eccentric landlords and more….

Has already stimulated some memories of various events (and boozy nights) at some of the establishments – RW

With over 300 photographs  and priced at £15, it is certainly good value for money and can be highly recommended – Looker Magazine

What a great read. Just the right amount of text with lots of information and many photos, past and present. I have really enjoyed reading it, being taken “back in time” to my past – KW

The book gives an insight into how important the traditional pub has been to the community as a general meeting place as well as a venue for functions like weddings, auctions, sporting matches and indoor games. Priced at £15 this wide-ranging book is good value.
